Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper.
- Dust a clean surface with flour and roll out one sheet of puff pastry into a rectangle slightly larger than the baking dish. Transfer to the dish, prick with a fork, and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Let cool.
Making Custard
- In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium until it simmers.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until smooth. Slowly pour in the hot milk, whisking gently.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool slightly.
- Spread the warm custard evenly over the baked pastry.
Assembling and Glazing
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the custard, pressing gently.
- In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for the glaze until smooth. Pour over the pastry and spread evenly.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set before cutting into squares or rectangles.
Notes
For added flavor, consider infusing the milk with citrus zest or a cinnamon stick. Maintain even thickness when rolling out pastry for best results. A sprinkle of sea salt on the glaze can enhance sweetness.
