Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 340°F (170°C) and line an 8-inch square pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy.
  4. Stir in the melted butter and vanilla extract.
  5. Gently mix in the sifted flour until just incorporated.
  6. Gradually add the lukewarm milk, stirring until smooth.
  7. Carefully fold in the stiff egg whites.
  8. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan.
Cooking
  1. Bake for 35 to 60 minutes, until the top is golden.
  2. Allow the cake to cool completely and then dust with icing sugar.

This cake can be served with a dollop of whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or fresh berries. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
