Ingredients
  

Strawberry Syrup
  • 6 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • 3-4 tablespoons granulated sugar Adjust based on sweetness preference
  • 1/2 lemon zest (optional) Adds brightness to flavor
  • 1/2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional) Enhances acidity
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) For additional flavor
Final Assembly
  • 4 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and diced For topping
  • 2 cups cold milk Use whole, almond, or coconut milk as desired

Method
 

Preparation of Strawberry Syrup
  1. Hull and chop 6 ounces of strawberries into small pieces.
  2. Mash the strawberries in a bowl until they are crushed.
  3. Add sugar to the mashed strawberries and mix well.
  4. If desired, mix in the lemon zest and lemon juice for added flavor.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a small pot and simmer over medium-low heat for 2 to 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, if using.
  7. Let the syrup cool before transferring to an airtight container, and chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.
Final Assembly
  1. Hull and finely dice the remaining 4 ounces of strawberries.
  2. Divide the cooled strawberry syrup between two glasses.
  3. Top with diced strawberries and pour in cold milk.
  4. Stir gently to combine before serving immediately.

Notes

For best flavor, use fully ripe strawberries. Store any remaining syrup in the refrigerator for up to one week.
