Preparation of Strawberry Syrup
- Hull and chop 6 ounces of strawberries into small pieces.
- Mash the strawberries in a bowl until they are crushed.
- Add sugar to the mashed strawberries and mix well.
- If desired, mix in the lemon zest and lemon juice for added flavor.
- Transfer the mixture to a small pot and simmer over medium-low heat for 2 to 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, if using.
- Let the syrup cool before transferring to an airtight container, and chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.
Final Assembly
- Hull and finely dice the remaining 4 ounces of strawberries.
- Divide the cooled strawberry syrup between two glasses.
- Top with diced strawberries and pour in cold milk.
- Stir gently to combine before serving immediately.
Notes
For best flavor, use fully ripe strawberries. Store any remaining syrup in the refrigerator for up to one week.
