Preparation
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
- Divide the dough into two portions and tint one half with orange and the other with black gel food coloring.
- Knead each portion separately until the colors are vibrant.
Rolling and Chilling
- Roll out each portion between two sheets of parchment paper into rectangles about ¼ inch thick.
- Stack one rectangle on top of the other and gently press down.
- Roll the dough tightly from one short end to create a log.
- Wrap the log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Slice the chilled log into ¼-inch thick rounds and arrange them on the baking sheets.
- Press a few Halloween sprinkles onto the tops of the cookies, if desired.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges are set but not browned.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For extra moisture, include a slice of apple in the container.
