Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F) Ensure the water is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil for frying Heat to 350°F for frying.
Filling and Garnish
  • 8 oz burrata cheese, drained Luscious filling for the donuts.
  • 1/2 cup hot honey For a spicy kick; regular honey mixed with chili flakes can be an alternative.
  • 1 tsp flaky sea salt To sprinkle on top.
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish Can be swapped for arugula or mint for freshness.

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm water and yeast, allowing it to foam for about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm area until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Shape the Donuts
  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thick on a floured surface.
  2. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters to cut out donuts.
  3. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover them again, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Fry the Donuts
  1. In a deep saucepan, heat vegetable oil to 350°F.
  2. Fry the donuts in batches until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to remove them, and drain on paper towels.
Assemble the Delights
  1. Once the donuts have cooled slightly, carefully slice each donut open.
  2. Fill the center with burrata cheese, drizzle hot honey over the top, and finish with flaky sea salt and fresh basil.

Notes

These donuts are best enjoyed fresh. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in the oven to restore crispness.
