  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add in the peppermint extract, salt, and a splash of heavy cream or milk. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar until a soft dough forms.
  4. If using, divide the dough and knead in gel food coloring to achieve desired vibrancy.
  5. On a powdered sugar-dusted surface, roll the dough into thin ropes.
  6. Cut the ropes into bite-sized pieces with a scraper or knife.
  7. Spread the mints on parchment and let them dry at room temperature for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Notes
