Ingredients

For the fries
  • 26 ounces frozen French fries Use thicker-cut fries for more bite or shoestrings for extra crispiness.
For the cheese sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter Unsalted butter is recommended.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour For thickening the sauce.
  • 2 cups milk Consider a plant-based alternative for a dairy-free version.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 2 teaspoons ranch seasoning powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder Divided; adjust to taste.
  • 8 ounces white cheddar cheese Shredded; grate fresh cheese for a smoother sauce.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven or air fryer to 400°F.
  2. Arrange frozen fries in a single layer on a baking sheet or air fryer basket. Bake until golden brown according to package instructions.
Make the cheese sauce
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and whisk in the flour until combined; cook for about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add milk while whisking continuously; stir in salt, pepper, ranch seasoning, and cayenne.
  3. Lower heat to medium-low and cook until thickened (about 5 minutes), then stir in shredded cheese until melted and creamy.
Serve
  1. Pour the cheese sauce over cooked fries and serve warm.

Notes

For serving, top with a sprinkle of cayenne or chopped green onions for freshness. Serve alongside fried chicken or a big salad, or as a shared appetizer. Store fries and sauce separately to keep fries crisp.
