German Apple Pie

Ingredients
  

Apple Filling
  • 6 medium medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced Dot the apples with butter before baking.
Pie Crust
  • 1 pre-made pre-made pie crust (or homemade, if you prefer)
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash) Brush on the top crust for a golden finish.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Toss them with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  3. Roll out your pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie plate.
Assembly
  1. Fill the crust with the apple mixture and dot the top with butter.
  2. Lay a second crust on top, seal the edges, and cut slits into the top crust.
  3. Brush the top with beaten egg and place on a baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35-40 minutes, or until golden.
  2. Let the pie cool for at least one hour before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. For longer storage, cover and refrigerate for up to a week.
