Ingredients

For the dough
  • 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C) Should be pleasantly warm to not kill the yeast.
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for proofing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened (for dough)
For the filling
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
For coating and brushing
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon (for coating)

Method

Prepare the filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
Shortcut method (crescent dough or puff pastry)
  1. Unroll the crescent dough and pinch seams together to form solid rectangles.
  2. Cut dough into equal squares.
Homemade dough method
  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and 2 tbsp granulated sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 large egg, and 3 tbsp softened unsalted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic, then place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  4. Roll dough into a rectangle and cut into squares.
Assemble
  1. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of cream cheese filling to the center of each square.
  2. Fold over and pinch edges tightly to seal so no filling escapes during baking.
Preheat oven or air fryer
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) or air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Bake or air-fry
  1. Arrange rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden and puffed.
  2. Alternatively, cook in the air fryer for 6 to 8 minutes until golden brown.
Finish
  1. Brush warm rolls generously with melted butter, then toss or brush with the cinnamon-sugar mixture until well coated.

Notes

Serve them warm with coffee, chai, or citrusy tea. This recipe allows for variations like adding orange zest or making a savory version.
