Blackberry Dumplings

Ingredients
  

For the Blackberry Sauce
  • 1 quart Fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed Use ripe, full-flavored blackberries or frozen blackberries.
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Sugar Adjust to taste if desired.
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon extract
For the Dumplings
  • 1 1/2 cups Flour
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar Extra sugar for the dumplings.
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg Can substitute with cinnamon.
  • 2/3 cup Milk For a richer flavor, replace some with buttermilk.

Method
 

Prepare the Blackberry Sauce
  1. Combine the blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract in a large saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Make the Dumplings
  1. Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  2. Add milk gradually, stirring to combine; the dough should be soft.
  3. Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough into the blackberry mixture and cover.
  4. Simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

Notes

Serve hot with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
