Ingredients
  

Berry Mixture
  • 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed Use ripe, plump berries for best flavor.
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar Adjust sugar to taste.
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp lemon extract Can be substituted with orange juice for variation.
Dumpling Batter
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup milk For a richer flavor, substitute some milk with cream.

Method
 

Preparing the Berry Mixture
  1. In a large, wide saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 tsp of salt, and lemon extract.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
Making the Dumpling Batter
  1. In another bowl, mix the flour, 1 tbsp sugar, baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, nutmeg, and milk until smooth.
Cooking the Dumplings
  1. Drop the batter by tablespoonfuls into the simmering berry mixture.
  2. Cover tightly and let the dumplings cook for 15 minutes.
Serving
  1. Ladle the dumplings into bowls and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  2. Garnish with fresh mint if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days; reheat gently in the microwave or stovetop. Avoid over-mixing the batter to keep dumplings fluffy.
