Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 large tart/crisp apples (Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp) Choose any of the recommended types for best flavor.
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free option.
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided 1 tablespoon for the coating and 3 tablespoons for cinnamon-sugar mix.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon, divided 1 teaspoon for the coating and ½ teaspoon for cinnamon-sugar mix.
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil For frying.

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into ½-inch to ¾-inch thick slices.
  2. Place the apple slices in a large bowl and pour over the milk. Toss to coat and set aside.
  3. In a pie plate, mix the flour, cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the remaining 3 tablespoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon for later.
  5. Remove 6 to 8 apple slices from the milk, allowing excess milk to drip off, then toss them in the flour mixture.
Cooking
  1. Heat ¼ cup of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Fry each batch of apple slices (6 to 8 at a time) for about 1 to 1½ minutes on each side until golden.
  3. Transfer cooked slices to a paper towel-lined baking sheet and sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  4. Repeat frying with the remaining slices, adding fresh oil as needed.
Serving
  1. Serve warm, dusted with cinnamon-sugar, optionally drizzled with caramel sauce.

Notes

For extra crispiness, shake off excess milk and flour coating before frying. Consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or vanilla extract to the flour mixture for additional flavor.
