Dough
  • 2 batches homemade pie dough
Filling
  • 6 medium apples (preferably Gala or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and seeded Use fresh, firm apples for the best results.
  • 1.5 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar For sprinkling on apples.
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter, cut into 6 pieces One piece per dumpling.
Syrup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar For syrup.
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out each batch of pie dough into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Divide each rectangle into three equal squares and chill them in the refrigerator.
  4. In a small bowl, blend the cinnamon and 0.5 cup of sugar.
  5. Place an apple in the center of each dough square, sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture, and add a piece of butter.
  6. Fold the corners of the dough over the apple, dabbing the edges with water to seal.
Baking
  1. Place the dumplings in two 9x13 baking dishes.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water, 1 cup sugar, 0.25 teaspoon cinnamon, and 3 tablespoons butter. Bring to a boil.
  3. Pour the syrup around the dumplings.
  4. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the apples are tender.
Serving
  1. Let cool slightly and drizzle with syrup before serving.
  2. Serve warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Storage
  1. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  2. Gently reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
